Report on Science Museum

The principal aim of this report is to describe my recent visit to the City Science Museum. At the end, recommendations are provided on whether it is a suitable place for school group visits.

Description of the visit

The museum offers a wide range of exhibits that cover natural sciences. It includes activities that require high levels of attention and participation such as experiments in the physics zone. The astronomy area features videos showing the evolvement and the movement of different planets and stars. The geology section has a stunning collection of minerals; while the meteorology section emphasizes the changes in temperature that the Earth has shown in the last one hundred years, illustrating current and potential consequences.

Suitability of the museum for school visits

On one hand, The City Science Museum is an excellent venue for educational group visits that are interested in studying just the science areas mentioned above. It contains physical objects for students to touch and see and a guided tour where any question can be answered. It is also a good instance for students to have nearness to the area because these sciences are usually not covered in their totality at schools.

On the other hand, there is no information about social sciences, and students who are interested in those areas might get bored and distract those who are interested in this experience.

I would therefore recommend the museum for groups of students who chose an elective related to the sciences that are in the museum.

Proposal for Study Trip

This proposal aims to outline two potential destinations for the class one-day study trip, each of them presented with its possible educational benefits. Comments made at the end of the document recommend the most suitable option for the class.

The Regional History Museum

In the city, the Regional History Museum is well-known for its exhibit collections spanning from ancient to modern history. In the highlights of the place, there are interactive exhibits on local history, primary source archives, and a section that deals only with our local history. A guided tour could provide us with in-depth insights into historical research methods.

Sotomayor Square

This site located in Valparaíso commemorates and serves honors to the national heroes of Iquique. This place is where the remains of Arturo Prat lie, within the remains of the frigate Esmeralda. This visit could make students feel closer to national history by being in a historical location.

Recommendation

I recommend the Regional History Museum; its hands-on different parts of the regional and national history of our country, with interactive activities that provide an engaging and dynamic learning environment. By exploring multiple historical events instead of just one for an entire day, students can gain a deeper understanding of the cultural and social contexts that formed what our region and country are today.

If this recommendation is implemented, I am certain that students will have a beneficial day full of learning while watching historical items from different decades.

Before watching the video:

  • What comes to mind when you hear the term “circular economy”?

I think about an economy that is good for the environment, where industries consider the consequences of production.

  • How familiar are you with the concept of circularity in economic systems?

I am not familiar with it, what I know about it is what I learned last year in classes.

  • What are some potential benefits of transitioning to a circular economy?

If the world moves to a circular economy, it will bring positive consequences for the environment, it will cause fewer residues, cheaper prices, and less pollution.

  • Can you think of any challenges or barriers that might impede the adoption of circular practices?

It would be hard to achieve a circular economy if countries do not want to make the change

  • In what ways do you think individuals and businesses can contribute to a more circular economy?

Invest in machines that help the procedure for reusing materials in textiles and promoting recycling.

While watching the video:

Please watch the video twice and answer the following questions based on the information discussed on the video.

  • What is the main objective of a circular economy, as explained in the video?

To get a system that remains for a long term, using renewable energies and reusing materials of gadgets that were thrown away.

  • According to the video, what are the key differences between a linear economy and a circular economy?

Linear economy uses resources that are extracted, then, at the end of their life cycle, they are disposed. Meanwhile, the circular economy aims to minimize waste and the overuse of finite resources, trying to avoid the end of their life cycle.

Linear economy approach is take-make-dispose, in the meantime, the circular economy is based on reusing, repairing, recycling, and renewing to make them usable for longer periods of time.

  • Can you identify some examples of products or materials that follow a circular economy model, as mentioned in the video?

The video mentioned cars and fridges as products designed to follow a circular economy model; by reusing materials in other products.

  • How does the concept of “closing the loop” relate to the principles of a circular economy?

It is an imitation of the living function price. It also makes products affordable; the loop is a principle of circular economy to conserve resources and reduce pollution.

  • What role do consumers play in driving the transition towards a circular economy, according to the video?

Consumers have an important role to follow, they can ask for products that are designed to be made again and reused. Consumers can help by their willingness to pay for these products.

  • What are some of the environmental benefits highlighted in the video as a result of adopting circular economy principles?

The elimination of waste, creation of a more resilient system, reduce usage of finite resources, and the usage of renewable energy sources.

  • In what ways can businesses benefit from embracing circularity, as discussed in the video?

The closure of the loop on waste could help businesses by reducing their amount of waste by reusing it for other products. By reusing parts of old products, there is less material creation, this would help with the reduction of the reliance on finite resources.

  • What challenges or obstacles are mentioned in the video that might hinder the widespread implementation of circular economy practices?

The resistance from companies or consumers resistance to change, and the lack of awareness on the understanding of the topic.

  • How does the concept of “designing for disassembly” contribute to the circular economy, as explained in the video?

By allowing products to be easily broken down and their materials reused in new products for their useful life to be longer; this could made future products cheaper by reducing the cost of production. The reduce of waste is also a contribution to the circular economy.

  • Based on the information provided in the video, what are some practical steps that governments, businesses, and individuals can take to promote and support a circular economy?

Government and businesses can help by raising awareness of the situation, the government can ask for a development on policy frameworks.

Businesses should change their steps of production to embrace the reuse of old pieces for new products and using renewable energy.

Individuals can support the movement by being informed, preferring companies that use and reuse materials.

Dear friend,

Thank you for your quick answer and I apologize for the late response, I have been dealing with a lot of house chores and I forgot to write you back before.

I’m really excited to hear that you are moving here. I am glad you asked for some tips on learning the language faster.

When I first arrived here, keeping on track with the conversations was hard. But things got much easier once I lost the embarrassment and received feedback from my friends. I also tried to read the news and, by looking at the images, understood the words I didn’t know by the context.

Something that my friends recommended was to watch sitcoms with English subtitles, that is how they learned some slang and collocations. What really worked for me was to avoid using my first language at least for a few months, this made me feel comfortable with using the language and get into casual conversation with strangers.

I hope my tips and experiences help you adapt and learn the language quickly.

I hope to hear from you soon, don’t lose contact!

Regards,

Maira Oyarzún Ruiz

Mr. Wilden:

I am writing this letter to express my disappointment with the Fairplay concert recently organized by you.

Firstly, the location did not match the description in the flyer, which indicated seating for 3,000 attendees, making the show uncomfortable. Another dissatisfaction was the timing; the support act “Boyglow” lasted longer than the main act “Fairplay”, which was on stage for a short period. The new hall promoted on the announcement flyer did not reach the public expectations, it was an uncomfortable space without any place to buy drinks.

Since the flyer promoted information was not achieved at the moment of the event, I believe it is fair to request a refund for the ticket cost and some extra money for the public who attended the event and paid for transportation, and accommodations.

I urge you to investigate this matter thoroughly and provide fans with an explanation and appropriate refunds.

If you need further information please contact me; I await your response.

Yours sincerely,

Maira Oyarzún Ruiz

To whom it may concern,

I am writing about the exchange program benefit that there is between both our colleges. I think I would be a perfect fit for the program, and that is what I will address in this letter.

At my home institution, I have been studying English Pedagogy for elementary and high school students. I am currently in my fifth and final year of the program.

I believe I am suitable for the exchange program, not only because I have been intensively studying English as a Foreign Language for the past 5 years, but also because I am interested in learning about other cultures by immersing in the country. Also, I am currently preparing for the CAE exam, and experiencing the language in a native country would be beneficial.

I would like to take as much advantage as I can from this experience. This would benefit my studies in several aspects; firstly, I would have the chance to take new education courses that would help my professional career. Finally, I would immerse myself in the culture, meet new people, and even share some of my knowledge.

If you require further information, please do not hesitate to ask. I will be waiting for an answer.

Yours faithfully,

Maira Oyarzún Ruiz

To whom it may concern,

I am writing regarding the significant issue of plastic water bottles that our college faces. I would like to propose some ideas to help reduce the daily discard of these bottles.

One suggestion is for the college to introduce water dispensers at different locations across each campus. Additionally, we could welcome first-year students with a welcome gift consisting of a reusable water bottle and a map of the different refill stations available throughout college.

These implementations would offer several benefits to students. Firstly, it would provide convenient hydration points throughout their day on campus. Secondly, it would discourage students from buying single-use plastic bottles from campus stores. Thirdly, it would contribute to a reduction in waste production, resulting in cleaner spaces across campus.

To ensure students’ cooperation, authorities should destine funding to implement these proposals. Plus, awareness campaigns and flyers should be distributed and displayed around the college. Educational talks about the consequences of waste and global warming and the importance of staying hydrated.

I very much hope you will consider the ideas delivered in this letter. I look forward to hearing your views on my suggestions.

Yours faithfully,

Maira Oyarzún Ruiz

Gilmore Girls series review

Gilmore Girls is a comedy-drama TV show launched in the 200s’ created by Amy Sherman and starring Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel. The show lasted 7 seasons, it came to an end in 2007 with a brief comeback series in 2016. It has around 150 episodes in total, with a duration of approximately 40 minutes each.

The show is set in a small town called Stars Hollow, Connecticut, where a young mother (Lauren) and her daughter (Alexis), both called Lorelai, are living their lives in their home surrounded by a town that watched both of them grow. Throughout the series, there are several plots, but the one the show starts with is Rory (the daughter) being accepted to a private, prestigious, and expensive school. As a consequence, Lorelai needs to retake contact with her wealthy parents; played by Edward Hermann and Kelly Bishop.

Throughout the show, it is possible to live their lives and accompany them in their problems and successes; watching both perspectives: motherhood and childhood. This is one of my personal favorite features because it allows the public of all ages to enjoy the show, and identify with some situations.

It is for the reasons previously mentioned and many more that personally, I would recommend watching this show; it helps you to feel accompanied, and it has many emotions and everyday situations. It would be a shame to lose the opportunity to watch it, so I recommend you to make some time on your schedule to enjoy it!
